SMART Board interactive whiteboards

CBE’s Innovative Learning Services to lead technology innovation with teaching resources and best practices

CALGARY, Alberta --- October 16, 2006 --- SMART Technologies Inc. announces that the Calgary Board of Education (CBE), the largest school district in Western Canada, has standardized on the SMART BoardTM interactive whiteboard and other SMART products for district-wide implementation. SMART will supply the CBE’s 220-plus schools, almost 10,000 staff and close to 100,000 students with best-in-class technology. Calgary-based APEX AVSI, one of Canada’s leading audiovisual systems integrators, will install all SMART products for the CBE.

The CBE continues to develop a world-class education system with a baseline technical platform across schools to leverage learning best practices, increase teaching resources and support, form an online community of educators and students to share ideas, and strengthen professional development. The standardization on SMART products will allow the CBE to involve teachers in a resource-rich community for both teaching and learning in a 21st-century classroom environment. The CBE and SMART will also work together on a series of related projects in the 2006–2007 school year, including developing a CBE high school SMART Board interactive whiteboard initiative to establish classroom best practices.

“Providing students and educators with technology to address flexible, customizable learning promotes individual learner success today and into the future,” says Cathy Faber, director of innovative learning services with the CBE.  “SMART products, for classroom and online learning, will become integral to the CBE educational technology strategy. We are delighted to be working with SMART and look forward to engaging students and teachers in 21st- century learning environments.”

“The Calgary Board of Education has shown tremendous leadership and foresight in embracing a technology-rich 21st-century learning environment,” says Nancy Knowlton, SMART’s president and co-CEO. “Establishing a state-of-the-art repository of resources, providing leading-edge technology tools and delivering sustained professional development will ensure teachers and staff have everything they need to effectively develop students for the future.”
